ICC Champions Trophy 2009 winning prize money nailed down at four million dollars or $4 000 000.00,
as it is nice to see the zeros .

It has been declared that the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 will have its prize money quadrupled from around $1m last time, to $4m in 2009 champions trophy. The last ICC Champions Trophy was staged in India, back in 2006. The host for 2006 ICC champions trophy was Mohali, Mumbai, Jaipur Harun Lorgat and Ahmedabad. In 2009 ICC champions trophy willo be held in South Africa. Two places where the cricket matched will be held are Centurion and Johannesburg.

At first all was pointing to Pakistan hosting 2009 champions trophy, but after various sides, for various reasons, refused to play in Pakistan, the tournament moved to South Africa. One of the reasons was sad but real issue of security in Pakistan. The 2009 champions trophy was then put off until 2009. Even setting the actual dates for the champions trophy proved to be quite complicated task due to overloaded cricketing calendar.

Eight teams will participate in Champions Trophy 2009, instead ten last time. Additionally the champions trophy will last just 15 days. last champions trophy was held for almost a full month due to qualifying rounds. Out of the ten only 4 cricket teams had to “qualify” for the champions trophy. just top two cricket teams joined others. Six cricket teams directly qualified for the champions trophy. West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe were the onesto fight each other for qualifing spot. At the end Sri Lanka and the West Indies had prevailed to make it through.

Even though west indies managed to beat Australia in a league game, Australia came out on top to win their first Champions Trophy by beating West Indies in the final.

ICC champions trophy 2009 will see some old rivals play each other. India and Pakistan will play in the same group, along with the two finalists of last champions trophy, Australia and West Indies. The other group has England, Sri Lanka, South Africa and New Zealand. In 2006 champions trophy South Africa and New Zealand were in 3rd and 4th spot. A round robin will be played between 4 teams in group and the top two from each group will advance to semi-finals.

ICC champions trophy 2009 is scheduled to be played between 22nd September and 5th October.

“This short, sharp event, with its new format involving only the top eight sides in the world in nation-versus-nation action, should be a fantastic spectacle to follow on from the others that have already taken place in the ICC’s centenary year.” announced Haroon Lorgat, the CEO of the ICC said, he also appreciated South Africa for stepping in to host 2009champions trophy as Pakistan wasn’t allowed to host the champions trophy 2009.

The Indian Cricket Team in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy

The Indian cricket team will be one of the top contenders for the ICC Champions Trophy to be played in South Africa in September and October 2009.

India is currently the second-ranked one-day international team, only one point behind South Africa. India shares its pool for the 2009 Champions Trophy with Australia, Pakistan and the West Indies.

India have only been holders of the ICC Champions Trophy once, when the final was washed out in 2002, and India was awarded the Champions Trophy jointly with Sri Lanka. The Indian cricket team were beaten finalists in 2000, when New Zealand won the Champions Trophy tournament.

A pivotal player for the Indian cricket team in the 2009 Champions Trophy will be Sachin Tendulkar. The 36 year old has been an integral part of the Indian team for twenty years. Despite rumours of retirement, Sachin Tendulkar has indicated that he is still keen to play right up until the 2011 World Cup. His next goal is to reach 15 000 runs in one-day internationals, which will be yet another record to set alongside a career full of stunning achievements with the bat. Sachin Tendulkar has had injuries, operations and rehabilitation in recent years, yet his form seems undiminished. He is worshipped in India as a cricketing god. When it does come, Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement will leave a void in the Indian top order that will be hard to fill.

Sachin Tendulkar is part of a thirty-man squad of probables for the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy, which will be whittled down to fifteen before the tournament begins. Also included is Rahul Dravid, who has not played a one-day international since October 2007. It has been suggested his inclusion in the squad is to counter a perceived weakness against short bowling in some of India’s younger middle-order batsmen. Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan were all troubled by bouncers in the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in England, and again in the recent games against the West Indies.

Bowler Zaheer Khan has been ruled out of the Indian cricket team for the 2009 Champions Trophy after having shoulder surgery last month. The injury was picked up while he was playing in the lucrative Indian Premier League.

All of the Indian team who won the recent series against the West Indies have been included in the larger squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, as well as a handful of top Indian players who sat out that tour with injury or fatigue concerns. Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina will all be returning for the 2009 Champions Trophy.

The Indian cricket team have enjoyed excellent form in the lead-up to the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy, winning series against Australia, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. Their recent win against the West Indies was their fifth series win in a row. They have also been winning overseas, which has previously been a weakness for the Indian cricket team. India’s big hitting, quick scoring and speed of play has influenced cricket world-wide. They will have been disappointed not to win their home tournament when the ICC Champions Trophy was last held, in India in 2006, but they have never approached a Champions Trophy in such good form and with such excellent momentum as they do the ICC 2009 Champions Trophy in South Africa.

2009 ICC Champions Trophy

After much delay and debate, the ICC Champions Trophy for 2009 will take place in South Africa from the 22nd of September until the 5th of October.

The ICC Champions Trophy was initially to be played in Pakistan in 2008, but security concerns saw a number of cricket teams threaten to withdraw from the Champions Trophy tournament. The ICC Champions Trophy was moved forward to 2009, and tentatively to Sri Lanka, but concerns over the weather resulted in the cricket tournament being moved once again, to South Africa. South African Cricket negotiated extensively with the ICC before agreeing to host the Champions Trophy.

The ICC Champions Trophy has be played every two years since 1998, when it was the ICC Knock Out Tournament. The last ICC Champions Trophy was played back in 2006, in India, when Australia beat the West Indies to win the Champions Trophy tournament for the first time. Other previous winners are the South Africa, New Zealand and England, with Sri Lanka and India being awarded it jointly when the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy final was washed out twice.

Several changes have been made for the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy. There will now be shorter round-robin play, with the Champions Trophy tournament restricted to the top eight one-day cricket-playing nations, as of world cricket rankings from six months before the Champions Trophy takes place. That means the 2009 Champions Trophy will take place over a much shorter time frame. This, combined with the South African time zone, will be attractive for overseas audiences watching the 2009 Champions Trophy live, or following the Champions Trophy live on the internet. All the games will be played at either Johannesburg or nearby Centurion, with games starting at either 1pm or 6pm for live Champions Trophy audiences in India.

Also, the prize money for the 2009 Champions Trophy has increased dramatically, nearly quadrupling to US$4 million. Both the prize money and the tighter format of the Champions Trophy tournament show the influence of India’s lucrative Twenty20 tournaments on international cricket. All teams will be keen to do their very best to get a share of the ICC Champions Trophy prize money.

The eight teams for the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy are India, Pakistan, Australia and the West Indies in Pool A; and New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa and England in Pool B. Each team plays the others in its pool once, before the top two teams progress to the Champions Trophy semi-finals. With so few games and the closeness in strength of the teams for the Champions Trophy, it will be very difficult to predict which teams will make it through to the Champions Trophy semi-finals. A weakened West Indies and an out of form New Zealand should have trouble against competition of the caliber of the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy. Several of the sides have injury concerns also, which should ensure that the games of the ICC Champions Trophy will be close and exciting. The lack of second-tier teams means that the 2009 Champions Trophy should be devoid of dull, one-sided matches. All in all, it will be well worth catching the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy live.
